Two Ways To Make Your Workout Work Better For You

Let’s face it, it takes hard work to see great results with your personal trainers toronto fitness or fat loss program. If you just do what your body can already comfortably handle, what possible reason does it have to change? In order to see progress you’ll need to get outside your comfort zone a little bit, otherwise you’re just wasting time. That means working harder, yes, but you need to be creative about ways to continuously challenge your body.

What follows are a couple of techniques which we use as part of our Personal Trainers Toronto programs to ensure our trainees get the maximum out of every single workout. Do these correctly, and you’ll improve your workout intensity in a big way.

Technique # 1: supersets. Supersets are great way to up your workout intensity. They consist of alternating exercises such as dumbbell rows and pushups, shoulder presses and squats, bench press and step ups. The specific exercises are not as important as choosing combinations that work different areas of the body.

When doing supersets, you basically alternate two exercises without rest. Because they target different muscle groups, your muscles have a chance to recover, but your heart rate stays high. The result is an awesome workout! This works especially well with antagonistic muscle groups such as pecs and lats, biceps and triceps, hamstrings and quadriceps. You can achieve a very effective and complete workout by combining just a few different supersets. A good Toronto personal trainer will show you the best way to do this.

Technique # 2: drop sets. There are many ways to do this correctly, but in this example, let’s start with an exercise such as a dumbbell shoulder press. Begin with a weight which allows you to get about 10 repetitions in good form, then drop the weight by about 25% and continue – with no rest in between. You can also perform a third drop lowering the weight another 25%. Drop sets require an “all-out” effort from the muscle, which makes it more likely to respond and adapt.

TIP: This type of training is very intense and should not be used in every session, unless it is for a very short-term program. Personal trainers in Toronto will help with program design so you know when to incorporate these techniques.

Hard work alone won’t do it. If you want to progress faster, you’ll need to be smarter in your approach. Learn to incorporate intensity techniques like supersets and drop sets into your workout routine and you’ll be way ahead of the game when it comes to getting the most out the time you spend in the gym!
